Say hello to South Africa’s own superstar isopod — the Natal Pill Isopod!
Hardy, fast-breeding, and beautifully patterned, Venezillo natalensis is one of the best local isopods for both bioactive enclosures and display colonies.

Origins & Appearance

Native to southern Africa, including South Africa, Venezillo natalensis is a medium-sized pill isopod that grows to about 1.5–2 cm. They are usually grey to brown with mottled or speckled patterns, helping them blend into leaf litter and soil in the wild.

Behaviour & Habitat

These isopods are active, social, and adaptable. They enjoy both moist and semi-dry zones, and will often be seen grazing on the surface. Like true pill isopods, they can roll into a tight ball when threatened.

Diet & Care

Natal Pill Isopods are excellent detritivores, feeding on leaf litter, decaying wood, vegetables, and calcium sources. They are very hardy and forgiving, making them perfect for beginners, breeding projects, and clean-up crews in reptile and invertebrate enclosures.
